U of MN Tournament a True Classic: Story Written by John Stever

In the 5.0 final, Hannu Koho outlasted Arturo Manzur 3 - 2 in a tough five game match to take the top honors at the University of Minnesota Fall Classic Tournament on Saturday, December 8th. Hannu started strong taking the first game only to see Arturo come back and take the lead. The long fifth game went down to the wire, with Arturo playing great defense to stay even before Hannu prevailed in the match which lasted more than an hour. The 5.0 Consolation went to Richard Prince in a 3 – 1 victory over Pat O’Shea.

Other division winners include Tomas Gutierrez in 4.5, Dushyant Saran in 4.0, Adam Barylak in 3.5, Scott Casper at 3.0, and Jhon Wlaschin in 2.5. The 4.5 group played a round robin with just 4 players which became three when Glenn Baron went down with a leg injury. At 12 players, 4.0 was the largest draw. The lower three divisions were all won by University Club players which was not surprising given the majority of players at those levels were playing on their home courts.
RailStation software and the database on the US-Squash website were used for the first time for the Classic. The full results are posted there for all to view at https://www.bcisoft.com/railstation/tournyHome.aspx?TournyID=2144103533

There were a total of 46 participants in the tournament, held over three days from the 6th to the 8th. Reports from several players indicate the U of MN Squash Club put on another very successful tournament. Thanks to tournament directors John Stever and Vinh Chung for hosting a fine event.
