A large group of players gathered Wednesday, April 30th, for a fun night of squash, beer, pizza and powerade...and they were not disappointed as the club championship finals could not have been more exciting!
The evening started with the doubles final, Tedd Hoyt and Jon Dettman playing Jeff Ali and Arturo Manzur. Since the beginning Tedd and Jon's strategy was very clear, blast the ball and hit everything to Jeff, but Jeff was determined not to let down his partner after all those hours of practice witch certainly paid off as him and Arturo won in five games 15/8, 13/15, 15/10, 13/15 and 15/8.
The C- final was another exciting five gamer, Matt Hillard versus Dave Newhall, Matt took the first two games 9/6 and 9/3 but Dave fought back to even the score and took the next two 5/9 and 1/9. Matt took the fifth game 9/7 proving once more that in long matches youth will always prevail against experience.
The C+ final revealed two of the most improved players and future stars of the program: Josh Spaulding and Guy Sanschagrin. This time however, Josh seemed to be inspired by his cute 10-month baby and took the battle in three games: 9/4, 10/8 and 9/4.
In the B final, one of the contenders, Mike Pierce had to withdraw due to illness leaving the finalist spot to Tim Murphy (second classified). The other spot belonged to Mike Wendorf. Things started to look too easy for Mike as he took the first two games, 9/4 and 9/2 and the lead in the third game, 6/1, 7/2 and 8/4. but Tim was not going to die without a fight and came back to even things at 8 all. Mike had 6 match balls to wrap it up but finally lost the game 9/10. The fourth game was another tough one, this time Tim took the lead 8/2 and although Mike battled his way back into the match, he finally lost that one by 9/7. In the fifth, Tim took another early lead 6/2 but matches are not finished until they are finished! But Mike was determined and came back to win the game and match 9/6.
In the A final Wayne Miller had a very strong start against Tedd Hoyt. He played his best squash in a long time and took the first game 9/0 and the second one 9/3. He moved Tedd around with deception and changes of pace. Tedd was out of gas after the 1 hour 20 minute doubles final he had played an hour ago but showed us his warrior spirit and his hard hitting skills and took the third game 9/6. Unfortunately for him, Wayne was at the top of his game and took the fourth and final game 9/3.
Congratulations to all winners and participants.
